Return on Science's Scott Clifford

From Queen Bees, to Series Bs - introducing Scott Clifford,  a fresh new face on the Return on Science team.

Scott joined Otago Innovation in September 2022 as a commercialisation analyst and a Momentum Programme Intern. Then in January of 2023, he changed to full-time with Return on Science as a programme analyst, bringing a wealth of knowledge and experience to the table - and some of it is pretty eclectic!

Scott's journey to Return on Science began several years ago when he completed a double Major in Pharmacology and Microbiology. After completing his studies, he took some time to explore his passion for apiculture, specifically breeding queen bees. Once COVID-19 changed the working landscape, Scott felt the pull to return to the University of Otago. He recently completed his masters thesis, and is now ready to take on the …buzzy world of entrepreneurship.

…Please don’t unsubscribe for that.

A true believer in the power of entrepreneurship and the impact it can have on our community, Scott is particularly drawn to the ability to venture off the beaten track and explore new ideas. And of course, Dunedin’s unique entrepreneurial ecosystem makes it a prime place for such adventures. Ōtepoti is a city that values community and collaboration, and Scott is excited about the support and sense of unity that exists among different start-up resources and entrepreneurs in the city.

We spoke to Scott about his excitement in joining the team at Return on Science, and how he is looking forward to contributing to the growing Otago and New Zealand start-up scene.

He is also excited about the opportunity to interact with inspiring people and learn from their experiences.

Additionally, Scott is particularly excited about the opportunity to work with Momentum, a national student-led investment committee programme that provides access to world-class advice, connections, and investment opportunities to students and start-ups across New Zealand.

Momentum has a mentality of "any project, at any time" - similar to Startup Dunedin, no idea is too early, or too half-baked. They continue to provide support to presenters, and are a great resource for any entrepreneur.

We are super stoked to see Scott take the helm, and look forward to seeing the impact he will make in the startup community. With his passion for entrepreneurship and his wealth of knowledge and experience, we are confident that he will be a valuable asset to the team and the community.
