Introducing new Distiller incubator startup: Aftergame!

Dunedin's startup scene just got a major power-up.

The newest startup welcomed into Startup Dunedin’s Distiller Incubator is Aftergame; an app designed for tabletop gamers to track their plays, share their results, and enhance their gaming experience.

Team members Eric Poulin, John Brent, Eli Labes, and Chalene Scott are on a mission to revolutionise how we experience and remember our favourite board games - from Catan, to Monopoly, to everything in between. We caught up with the brains behind this venture for a very quick chat - here’s what we learned!

The story of Aftergame began - as all good board games do - with a quest.

The team wanted to find a better way to track wins and losses in Magic: The Gathering. Anyone who’s played tabletop or board games before can tell you - things can get pretty messy past level one, especially if you’ve got a big group with you!

Eric and John started with a simple spreadsheet, but soon realised that this wasn’t cutting it - they needed something more dynamic. From this, Aftergame was born, creating a platform where they could both share and cherish (and maybe brag about) their gaming victories.

Aftergame wants to organise the world’s game data and make it genuinely useful. These statistics could be a window into new insights, gaming trends, strategies, and undiscovered problems to solve. With backgrounds as early hires at Partly and Education Perfect, they have the skills to do it, too.

The team have set up home base here in Dunedin, which the team reckons is the best place for a new startup to take root (niche pun intended). Being part of a connected community with a lot of talent floating around is one thing, but the Dunedin community in particular is, according to co-founder Eric, “incredibly supportive, and residents really want to see fellow Dunedin companies succeed.”

What's got them most excited? Well, building a company is no small feat, but for this crew, seeing their vision come to life is the ultimate thrill.

We’re pretty excited about that too, and can’t wait to see where their mission will take them next. (After Mini-Wellycon, that is, where they’ll debut a new feature that’s perfect for bringing the gaming community together.)
